Using A Self-Storage Unit For Your School's Drama Club

Blog

Costumes, sets, and props can take up a lot of space in your school's storage area. One way to keep everything organized and ready for all your school plays is to keep them in a self-storage unit. Here are a few ways to organize your school drama club's equipment in between productions.

Prepare Your Items For Storage

Go through your school's storage area and throw away any items that are damaged or unusable before you start packing items away for storage. Create an inventory for every container you store away, and put the inventories in a binder in your drama club's office. This will help you to determine what you have on-hand as you prepare for your upcoming productions.

Sort And Organize Costumes

Costumes can be used over and over again with a few subtle changes, so be sure to keep your drama club's costumes in good shape. Sort each piece by size and color, and place them into garment storage bags. Purchase freestanding shelving units, and remove the center shelves from each unit. You can then add dowel rods to the units for hanging and organizing the costume pieces. Use round size dividers to make it easier to find the right pieces for your students. These dividers can be purchased from online retail supply stores.

Store Props In Plastic Containers

Use plastic storage containers to store props. Clear containers are ideal, as they make it easier to see what is stored without having to dig through to find the items you want. Sort the props by style, such as food props, wigs, and signs. Label the containers, and stack them along one wall in the storage unit. If you are using shelving units, you can arrange the containers on the shelves for easier access.

Store Set Pieces In The Back

Your set pieces are likely the largest items you'll be placing in the storage unit. Keeping them stored at the back makes it easier to access the other items as they are needed. Place set walls along the back wall, and secure them with bungee cords so they stay in place. Situate set furniture, such as tables, chairs, and sofas, in front of the wall pieces. Cover these items with canvas tarps to protect them from dust and debris.

With the right organization plan, you can keep your school's costumes, props, and set pieces neatly tucked away until they are needed.

The World Is Your Home

Hell, my name is Damian Daniels. My career forces me to move constantly, often all across the world. I have had more three-month-long leases than I can count. Because of all the moving I have had to do, I have really gotten it down to a fine art. Moving is almost like breathing to me and I can do it at the drop of the hat. So I decided that my knowledge and experience might be useful to someone else, so i decided to create a blog that is dedicated to moving and storage. I hope that we continue to learn and grow together and make the world our home.
